Position Summary 

The Scientist/Applied Researcher applies advanced health research training and experience to lead all phases of research investigations aimed at publication as well as applied health services research in response to policy questions. The role includes leadership of research project teams. The Scientist/Applied Researcher provides expert advice and recommendations to enhance research capacities and processes and informs the identification of CoRE research priorities and innovation. Professional networks are developed and sustained to enhance mental health and addiction system-level research excellence.

 

Requirements

Education and Experience: 

  1. PhD in health sciences (health services research, population health or epidemiology). 
  2. Three years or less since graduation from a recognized doctoral health research program.  
  3. At least one project completed as a principal investigator.  
  4. Experience in a mental health and/or addiction research setting required.  
  5. Experience with web design, social media, data visualization and AI preferred.  
  6. Minimum 5 peer-reviewed research publications.  

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

Mastery of quantitative research design (including experimental and quasi-experimental and mixed methods)/and advanced statistical analysis. 

Proficiency with research database and statistical analysis software. 

Mastery of literature review and environmental scan methods; knowledge of systematic review methods.

Mastery of research/evaluation measurement tool development and testing. 

Knowledge of healthcare evaluation, implementation science and healthcare performance measurement.

Knowledge of key principles/practices of knowledge translation /mobilization. 

Knowledge of mental health/substance use conditions, health and support services including the aims and objectives of the Alberta Model of recovery-oriented care required. 

Knowledge of key principles/practices/methods of ethical human participants research and regulatory requirements.   

Understanding of evaluation of research initiatives such as research impact frameworks preferred.

Knowledge of privacy, confidentiality, security and ethics practices for human participants research data and documents (training will be required) and the ethical use of generative AI in research. 

Knowledge of and ability to interpret relevant legislation and policy (e.g., Mental Health Act, Mental Health Services Protection Act, Alberta Health Act, Health Information Act, Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy (FOIP)) 

Proven oral and written communication skills including scientific writing (a sample will be required); ability to communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders. 

Proven ability to develop and lead research manuscripts from conception through publication. 

Ability to work independently and lead/supervise a research project team required.   

Critical thinking, flexibility, attention to detail but able to ‘see’ the big picture. 

Commitment to the values of rigor and objectivity in research. 

Commitment to the principles of evidence-based practice and evidence-informed policy. 

Discretion and tact; including consideration of the unique needs and potential vulnerabilities of participants and stakeholders. 

Recognition of the policy implications of research findings in context. 

Proficiency in MS Office required.
